  • Refer to your disaster recovery plan (DRP) if you have one.  (RHG can advise on this and has access to specialists companies that can assist)
  • Act to minimise further loss or damage i.e. emergency glazing, boarding up, instructing contractors etc.  Some insurers provide an emergency tradesman service.  Details of which can be found within your policy documentation.
  • Following theft/malicious damage, the loss/claims/incident will need to be reported to the police and a crime reference number obtained as soon as possible.
  • Document early, items damaged/being claimed for and photograph/retain items where possible.
  • Obtain an indication of repair/replacement costs.  Insurers usually require two comparable repair estimates on a like-for-like basis.
  • If you are the occupiers of the premises you may need to involve the building insurers, specifically if you are not responsible for repairs.  This of course will be arranged via the landlord or their managing agent.

Liability Claims

  • Send all related correspondence immediately and unanswered to our office.
  • Do not enter in to correspondence with the solicitor acting on behalf of the third party (other than to acknowledge and state the matter has been passed to insurers).
  • Most insurers will instruct a loss adjuster to assist in the decision as to whether or not liability will attach. This may involve a site visit and investigation. We ask that you assist as mush as possible in order for insurers to reach an early decision. This will ensure costs are kept to a minimum.  This may also assist in the prevention of similar future losses.
  • Most cases are settled out of court but occasionally a claim will progress to court and you may be asked to attend, but these cases are very rare.

The payment of claims is where we deliver our promise. We want to ensure that matters are settled quickly and with the minimum of fuss. We will drive the process to meet these objectives.
