Most insurers insist on certain standards of security such as window locks and alarms. There are, however, additional simple steps that you can take to protect your property.
10 Top Tips
• Install movement activated or dawn to dusk lights at the front and back of your home. These will welcome you home and help to deter prowlers.
• When you move house or if you lose your keys, always change the locks.
• The letterbox has been used to gain entry by putting a hand or instrument through to release the door lock's trigger/release mechanism. To prevent this fit a security cover or letter cage inside or use a second lock (deadlock) when you are in the house.
• If a stranger asks to use the phone in an emergency, offer to make the call for them and make them wait outside.
• Consider a gravel drive and path – the noise made by driving or walking on it will be a good deterrent.
• Fit a trellis on top of perimeter fencing - a flimsy trellis makes it difficult to climb over the fence.
• Put bricks in any expensive garden pots outside the house - this will make them too heavy to steal easily.
• Install a safe for your most valuable items. You may find having two safes useful as in the event that you are forced to open one, the other can remain hidden.
• Consider more unusual modes of home security, such as using your flowerbeds and borders as a deterrent by planting prickly shrubs underneath windows and around the perimeter of your house.
• Don’t leave spare car keys around the house as many a break in has led to the theft of a vehicle.
