A fine of almost £30,000 was imposed by the Environment Agency after it successfully prosecuted a firm for falling foul of recycling regulations.
The Great Western Wine Company was obliged to register with a recognised scheme to comply with the Packaging Waste Regulations. Between 2004 and 2008 it failed to register, saving thousands of pounds in fees. It has since paid and registered with an appropriate scheme.
All firms that are part of a packaging chain with an annual turnover of more than £2million and that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging in a year, must be registered.
